My wife and I spend the past weekend in beautiful Connecticut for our friends wedding. We took off from Burbank to JFK at 7am PDT, arrived at around 4pm EDT. After getting our rental car we took off on our 133 mile road trip to the Bed and Breakfast that we were staying at. Normally the trip would have taken about 2.5 hours, but not this trip. New York had an ‘Osama Alert’ in the subways, so there were a lot more people using the freeways than usual. On top of that, every freeway we took had some sort of construction.
The I-95 had a 12 mile stretch of road that the many overhead signs said would have a delay. The whole time we were on the delayed section of road we didn’t see any sign of construction, until we hit the last exit of the delay. The part of the road that was under construction only took out one lane for less that 1/4th of a mile. Our 133 mile, 2.5 hour trip took 5 hours.
The next morning at breakfast, we learned that the B&B that we were staying at was in between 2 different casino’s. I figured they were 10 of miles away and really didn’t think about trying to go to one or the other. While on the way to the wedding we past Foxwoods Casino, the Worlds Largest Casino. My god, the place looked like it’s own town. Since we had to pass the Casino on the way back to the B&B, we would be able to stop there. Cool.
The wedding was a beautiful, even with the rain. The Inn setup a tent, so the wedding could still happen outside, which is exactly what H wanted to have. The changing colors of the leaves could still be seen through the top of the tent. It was cool to hear the rain hit the tent in waves. R and H looked so happy during the entire ceremony (gee I wonder why right?). While talking with the newlyweds, they said they wanted to go to Foxwoods as well, but could not go until the next night, which we were supposed to fly home earlier in the day. L and I talked it over and decided to extend the trip by another day. We didn’t get to travel around the area and explore, so this gave us one more opportunity to do so.
The next day, we drove into Mystic, CT and walked around for a while. While we were having lunch at Mystic Pizza, they got a phone call that ‘Half Naked (someone)’ would be running by in five minutes. One of the servers said that this would make her day. I asked what was going to happen and she said that two brothers have a bet on the Yankees and Red Socks and the loser had to run from one place in the town to Mystic Pizza and back. I thought to myself, ‘This town is so cool’. A few minutes later, we see a guy running in boxer shorts, garter belt and shoes running up the street. Now, keep in mind, its still raining and about 70 degrees out. Being the tourists that we are, I had the video camera out and recorded the whole thing. I’ll have to encode it and send it to Mystic Pizza.
We then took off from there and hit up the Aquarium in Mystic. Wow, that place was cool. We spent a while at the bat ray tank, petting the bat rays. There was one bat ray that had a really small tail that, when he got used to me, would always bump my hand and slow down to get the optimal pet that he/she could get. Then we were off to see the creatures indoors. The Aquarium had a wide range of really cool ocean creatures. The fur otters where really funny. Picture some dude yelling out in frustration. That’s the call of the fur otter. The penguin exhibit was neat, but the only bummer was it was feeding time and no penguin was in the water swimming.
We spent the next few hours wandering around Mystic, had an awesome lunch (lobster rolls and scallop rolls) and a kick ass dinner (more lobster), then it was off to Foxwoods, without the newlyweds. They were all tired out, which I can understand. Got myself a players card, chips and sat down at a $1/$2 no limit table, my first Casino table experience with No Limit Hold’em. I’m not sure if this is the norm, but every 30 minutes all players had to pay $5 to play, but there wasn’t a rake. I lasted just under 2 hours with my loot. Made a few bad plays and a few good ones, but overall I was happy about the experience. I still gets the shakes when the pot is big and I have a good shot at winning, a very bad tell. I’m sure it will go away with more experience.
After I was done with the table, my wife and I walked around the Casino, got a bite to eat and left.
The next day we woke up, had breakfast/lunch and made our way back to JFK. This time the GPS unit told us to take CT-15 to the airport. Man that was a beautiful drive. There were trees all over the place and awesome bridges. Really makes Los Angeles look like ass. We made it to the airport a bit faster than what it took to leave and had a little over an hour to wait until we left. Then came weather issues. Three hours late, we left JFK and made it home a little after 1am.
